Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy (or as its more commonly known counselling) works in the way that it has a second persons outlook onto your emotional problems that you may have sub-consciously blocked your self from seeing. It is a common alternative therapy to things such as modern mind altering drugs (anti-depressants). It was originally founded by a Sigmund Freud who started the therapy intended to be a relationship between the patient and the psychotherapist that would help the patient in being able to work through their emotional problems leading to peace of mind.

There are many different types of this therapy that focus on different areas of peoples lives and also therapies for groups such as families. Some of these therapies and their intensions are below:

Behavioural therapy - With this therapy your therapist will first look at how you were conditioned as a child, as events and situations in your child hood often effect the things you do when you're an adult. This form of psychotherapy helps people deal with a range of problems such as depression, anxiety, phobias and eating disorders. It works in the way that the therapist goes through the negative thoughts the person has to cause their actions and then in turn help them work through the problem and hopefully removing the negativity, thus solving the problem. This is because with problems such as those listed above it is the negative thoughts (that have been brought on by a specific point in the persons life) that are causing them to feel down with them selves, stop eating etc. The person under going therapy will probably have to see their therapist for a few sessions over several weeks' maybe months, because problems that have affected them for a period of time will take a fair amount of time to work through completely.

Brief therapy - This type of therapy uses many different techniques, however, it is different to many others in the way it tends not to look for the cause of the problem from the past it looks at the present situation and what is causing the problem to stop you from moving on. Unlike other therapies where the person requires many sessions of treatment the problem is usually solved by the 4th or 5th session if not before, this technique has proven most effective with problems such as phobias.

Child psycotherapyChild therapy - This is an adaptation on the therapy used in adults and is effective for children who have suffered mistreatment at an earlier age. The therapist has different techniques such as thera-play, this is where they will incorporate things such as crayons, paint and puppets as children can struggle to articulate their feelings. The therapist also tends to work fairly close to the guardian of the child if the child is of a very young age (below age five or so) so they can be taught a form of structured play to practice with the child.

In many cases over the hundreds of years the therapy has been in practice it has been proven more effective than any drugs in some cases and also doesn't have any negative side effects. If you feel like you may have a psychological problem or you have experienced a trauma that may be resulting in negative thoughts you can speak to your doctor and they will be able to transfer you to the right type of therapist for your requirments.
