The therapy form osteopathy is an alternative therapy and has been practiced and developed over the last hundred or more years. It has been discovered that it is possible to determine and even heal problems such as back and general joint pain, insomnia, migraines and can relieve the symptoms of asthma. It is all to do with tension that has been built up in joints causing pressure or in some cases knocking them out of alignment. An imbalance of the pressure in your joints can also cause nerves to become trapped creating great discomfort for the person affected.
With your first session the therapist will gather all previous history of the complaint and your life style habits.
Once they have got all the information they require is when they will start to look at your posture and how well certain joints move.
When the therapist has got an overall picture on your situation they can then work on looking at specific joints such as lower/upper spine, wrists, knees ankles etc. they do all this using their hands. It is at this point where they will apply pressure to various joints trying to find any that are out of alignment.
These tend to be places that are causing stiffness in movement or inflamed joints.
Once the cause of the discomfort has been established there are several methods the therapist can use to rectify the problem. They can use massage to try and loosen the tense muscles causing the restriction around the joint. Or for specific joint problems that are out of alignment there is the technique known as "thrust" treatment this is where the therapist will apply a certain amount of pressure to a joint causing it to pop out and then go back to its proper alignment. With the "thrust" technique" there is usually a strange feeling as the joint is put back into the right position after it causing pain for however long the symptoms have been persisting.
Although once the problem has been determined and rectified it still usually takes a few sessions of therapy for the problem to be gone completely.
The therapy is recognised as a cure for certain problems by the British Health Association and many hospitals even have their own osteopathy department that runs along side modern medicine. It is advisable to make sure the person that is going to give you the treatment has the required qualifications before letting them attempt any kind of therapy on you. If you would like more information on the therapy you can speak to your doctor or even look it up online.
