The history of health spas goes right back to the Roman times when they started the spa therapy of baths with different oils even if they didn't know the full relaxing effects the oils they used can have on the body. In later years the spas were replaced by the hospitals so this is when they became places that focused on helping people loose weight and holiday resorts for the wealthy. In the modern world they are not exclusive to just the wealthy and there is a vast variety of spa treatments from around the world including Japanese, Swedish and European therapies being used in spas both in England and abroad.
Health spas generally have a selection of different treatments in the one centre making them the perfect place for people that just need a break or for those looking for an alternative therapy to help relieve health problems where normal medicine has failed. Most set the centre up as a hotel so you can have the full body overhaul experience in comfort and make it easier for you to be able to fully relax with out having to think about going home once the treatments are over. According to research spas are often a favourite spot for couples to get away from the daily stress of modern life and also honeymooning couples. The spas therapies on offer tend to consist of a mix of the following:
The water therapies - These are usually a selection of therapies such as Hydro massage this being a massage given by the pressure of water, Saunas which are fairly well known they are rooms that are filled with steam and work at opening pores and relieving tension from the body and then there are things like jet baths that have a group of water jets that are positioned so when someone sits in the bath it massages certain pressure points on their body.
Body toning - There are many spas that also use exercise as a form of relaxing your body as it works the joints and muscles in your body relaxing them, and also leads to general good health when you start up a regular exercise regime. It also tends to feel better if you work your body a little before pampering it.
Massage - Things like massage are one of the essentials in a spa as they have been a very popular form of relaxation for many years now. There are also so many different forms of massage now that mean massage alone can completely relax your body. The essential oils used in Aromatherapy also play quite a big part in the relaxation of your body as some have chemicals in them that actually have the ability to relax your muscles when in spasm.
Nutrition - Spas tend to have their own nutritionists to help you on your way to having a healthier life style because it is a known fact if your starting work on the outside of your body it tends to be best to start giving your body the right balance of foods it requires. With having the advice of professionals it gives you a head start because they can be shown exactly the right foods for your needs as it goes off your lifestyle, size, gender and other factors.
Although the treatments will vary from spa to spa these are usually the basics of any. The location of the actual spa is fairly important also for the guests to be able to fully relax for example if their was a spa right in the very centre of London on the busiest street it may not prove as relaxing as a spa based in the middle of the country in Southern England. However, some people find it difficult to relax in the country and need the city nearby, so it's just a case of finding a spa in the right location and with the range of services best suited to your personal preferences.
